Beijing’s Chaowai Soho is one of a number of commercial developments that seem to have more empty shops than occupied ones. But on Saturday the ground floor was transformed into an outdoor fashion market and attracting a crowd of mostly young women interested in the t-shirts and accessories on offer. It was a quick, effective way to bring dead space back to life. Meanwhile over at the Sanlitun Village a water feature was being put to good use.

The charred remains of what was to be a Mandarin Oriental hotel at China Central Television’s new headquarters. Fire-fighters say the blaze was ignited by fireworks set off within the construction site. One fire-fighter died from inhaling toxic fumes.
